Research interests: Anthropology of place; anthropological theory; religion; Japanese religions; ritual; modernity and secularism; ethics; pragmatism; hermeneutics; phenomenology.
Research: I am interested in the anthropology of place, focusing on traditional Japanese religions. I am looking to understand the relationships between Japanese religious practices and places, and how these shape religious life and secularisation processes that are peculiar to Japan.
Previously, I devoted my research to philosophical and theoretical aspects of anthropology, including the possibility and nature of intercultural understanding, ethnocentrism, objectivity, and relativism, drawing on various philosophical traditions (pragmatism, hermeneutics, and phenomenology).
