Thesis: Swiping Right on Tradition: An exploration of contemporary Emirati Marriage practices
Research: This project aims to look at how young people from the United Arab Emirates negotiate romantic relationships with the integration of social media and dating applications within the Emirati community. Digital ways of meeting romantic partners have opened new avenues for young people to meet outside their wider social networks. Moreover, it has unsettled traditional kinship patterns within the ethnic groups that form the multicultural fabric of the UAE. Additionally, I will be exploring how social acceptance, debates on morality and the white lies that keep the wheels of social cohesion moving effect emerging relationship practices.
Broadly interested in the anthropology of Europe and the Middle East within the themes of gender; kinship; identity; food; witchcraft; popular culture; nationalism and art.
