Bastian Thomsen completed his DPhil in anthropology with a research focus in environmental anthropology, anthrozoology, science and technology studies (STS), and multi-species livelihoods.

His doctoral project was a multi-species, multi-sited ethnography exploring how to mitigate conflict between competing human stakeholders, as well as humans and large-carnivores, such as grey wolves (Canis lupus) in the Cascadia bioregion of the Pacific Northwest, North America.  It explored the socio-cultural, economic, and environmental factors that inhibit or facilitate co-existence between species, seeking to construct a multi-species livelihoods framework for conservation management.

Prior to joining ISCA, Bastian completed a PhD in Social Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation at Central Queensland University, Australia, focusing on the ‘social’ dynamics that promote sustainability. He holds a Master of Science in International Management from Kedge Business School, France, an International Master of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, US, and Bachelor’s of Arts in International Studies and Spanish from the University of Idaho, US.

Bastian is an Assistant Professor of International Social Entrepreneurship at Boise State University in Idaho, United States. He co-established and co-leads Boise State’s Global Scholars Program with his wife Dr Jennifer Thomsen, which takes undergraduate and graduate students internationally to work on applied ethnographic service-learning projects with environmental nonprofit organizations.
