Emeritus Professor
I continue to research the ways wild chimpanzees of the Budongo Forest, Uganda obtain their essential minerals. This links in with the conservation work of the Budongo Conservation Field Station which I set up in 1990. We work with village people in the surrounding community to encourage them to protect the forest rather than contribute to its destruction. I visit the research station once a year. This year will be our 25th anniversary. We are now an official Ugandan NGO and have good links with the National Forest Authority and other local agencies. For my next research project I hope to investigate the mineral properties of termite mounds, which the chimpanzees also eat.
I have written two books on chimpanzees: Budongo: a forest and its chimpanzees (Methuen 1965) and The Chimpanzees of the Budongo Forest (Oxford University Press 2005).
